Feral pigeon is also most commonly called a city dove or a street pigeon and it is a very common domestic pigeon from the wild Rock pigeon breed. This particular breed inhabits naturally in sea-cliffs and mountain sides.
A feral pigeon, being a street pigeon, uses building ledges as substitute for the seas cliffs. As this type of pigeon lives in the city, it has managed to adapt to urban life and this species is abundant in cities all over the world.
Feeding Habits of a Feral Pigeon
A feral pigeon always eats with its flock and they all rely on food scraps from the public who admire the way their flock at parks and other open areas in the cities. In some places, these flocks of birds might go to farmlands and feed on stubbles and sowings. Spilled grains and mills are also great feeds for such pigeon breed.
Since this bird is used to being fed by just anybody, it is hard to make them domesticated. It has the capacity to find its own food therefore in nature; it does not need any petting.
Feral Pigeon as Domesticated Pigeon
Feral pigeon can also be domesticated but it takes time to make them warm to new owners. Keeping this breed of pigeon is very easy, all they need is good food, comfortable home and your time and patience in making them domesticated.
Provide them with a big and clean loft; do not keep them in close spaces as they are used to being on the move. The loft must have enough ventilation with direct sunlight pouring in.
In keeping feral pigeon as pet, you need a lot of patience and it needs a lot of attention. Be sure that you have enough time to spare each day with caring for it. Remember that it is used to being outside with a flock, so make sure that your flock is happy by keeping them in a roomy loft with a lot of room for flying and playing.

Younger feral pigeons may be a lot easier to train, since they have not been outside for long. Just make sure that you will keep them full with food so that they will know that they need to come back home to be fed.
Feed them with stapled diets that are rich in nutrients, mix grains and vegetable in their food to keep them naturally fed.
